Measuring e-Billing costs

In a recent survey, experts from the eBillingHub researched over sixty eight different law firms to study the effort and challenges in electronic billing. As a result, the eBillingHub published through ILTA its findings, which uncovered some previously unknown or misunderstood costs of eBilling, what we call the ‘eBilling myths’ including:

  • The major costs associated with e-billing are not with the e-Billing vendors---its actually the ongoing invoice processing! These costs comprise 2/3 of the total cost of a typical e-bill.
  • The common idea that once the initial client setup is done, ongoing e-billing is relatively inexpensive. In fact, the cost of setting up a client is, on average, less than one fourth of the cost of actually processing electronic invoices for that client during a 12 month period.
  • Initial client setup can also be expensive and error prone. Even if a template exists, modifications most likely need to be made which can be time consuming and confusing.
  • When all the costs were added up, costs that are spread throughout the firm in personnel costs, slow collections, etc., the average fully burdened cost of one electronic bill totaled $68.

Researching the origins of those costs

At the same time the eBillingHub completed another in-depth study devoted to uncovering the underlying reasons for the elevated costs associated with e-billing. The results of the survey indicated that:

  • Most law firms have a fragile e-Billing process where staff is bogged down by technicalities, like LEDES formatting, that keep breaking down unexpectedly.
  • Firms are discovering that these problems do not stop at the billing department, but also have a significant impact on the collection side as well.
  • Keeping up with e-billing volume and complexity is time-consuming, error-prone, and expensive.
